Master of Messkirch, Wildenstein Altarpiece (open) (1536). Staatsgallerie Stuttgart, Stuttgart, Germany. Tempera and oil on softwood. This detail from the Wildenstein Altarpiece depicts Saint Erasmus from behind. Just visible to the bottom left of the picture is Saint Erasmus’s windlass with his coiled intestines, which he is apparently carrying in his left hand. To the right, a wound in Saint Roch’s leg is being mended by an angel.
